I think lots of maples get this, mine in Ontario always got it too. Ugly but didn't seem to hurt the trees much. Latin name, miss European forester?
So, my best research (aka Google ;-) tells me that it could be 'black tar spot' possibly in the genus "Rhytisma," but would probably require labratory analysis to positively identify. Does this help?
